Description
This Andean Cordillera called Vilcabamba was a place to be safe. The Incas took refuge in this Cordiller for the ast battle against the Spanish conquerors.
An abrupt land with high peaks, snow-covered mountains and subtropical valleys helped to preserve peace in many Incas cities. The Spanish belieed thee cities keep large treasures in culture, civilization and wealth.
The Vilcabamba Cordillera includes Salkantay the highest summit-at 6,271 m.a.s.l. and Huamantay 5,917 m.a.s.l.
Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Soyro Cocha Lake
We will pick up you the hotel at 5:30 a.m., we will leave from Cusco approximately 6:00a.m. by private bus to Mollepata (2900m altitude) we will continue by bus to Soraypampa, Where we will begin our trek, here we need to check our luggage, pack de mules, and begin the long ascent to our campsite Soyro Cocha Lake, the ascent is approximately 5 hours long, and on our way we will be able to appreciate typical Andean flora and fauna. We will be camping just bellow the Salkantay glacier, we recommended passengers bring a down sleeping bag, good for sub-zero temperatures.
Day 2: Soyro Cocha Lake – Huayracmachay – Colcapampa
We will begin this day by climbing for one hour half to the Salkantay pass (4750m). Them we will begin a long descent towards Santa Teresa. We will take our lunch in Huayracmachay. During this long descent we will be able to laterally see the changes in vegetation and landscapes as we go from high mountain areas down to tropical jungle with its dense forest. We will camp in Colpapampa close to the thermal baths.
Day 3: Colcapampa – Sahuayaco – Cocalmayo
We leave from Colcapampa early as well after our breakfast at 7:00 a.m. this day is very beautiful the vegetation is very dense and we will see a variety of orchids and impressive water falls, after walking for 5 hours we will get La Playa (Sahuayaco) place here take our lunch, finally which take our private bus to go Santa Teresa, we will camp in Cocalmayo Hot spring.
Day 4: Cocalmayo – Lucmabamba – Llactapata - Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes
Around 7:00 a.m. we will have breakfast and them we will go in bus to Lucmabamba from here we will walk to Llactapata to hydroelectric a proximally 6 hours, here we will have our lunch and them we will take a train to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night in a hotel. After a visit to the ruins of Paucarcancha, our day will finish with a visit to Patallacta ruins, an important archeological centr located in the National Park of Machu Picchu. We return to Cuzco City on the evening train, leaving from 88 Km.
Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machupicchu
We have to get up very early in the morning at 5:00 a.m. to have the breakfast and them we will take the first bus to Citadel of Machupicchu, here your guide will give you a broad explanation of the archaeological center for proximally two hours after that you will have your free time to climbing up to the Huayna Picchu mountain and walk around to Machupicchu, later you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes then the train back Cusco or Ollantaytambo
